Welcome to the Carolinas District of Kiwanis International! We are an eclectic mix of ages, genders, occupations, backgrounds and interests. We are all passionate about making our community and the world a better place for children so they can thrive. We are devoted to serving the children in our local communities and also children all across the country and worldwide through unique and innovative service projects and fundraising initiatives.
As your Governor this year, I’ve chosen the theme “10-4 Good Buddy”—a phrase where “10-4” means “understood” and “everything is okay.” It represents our commitment to truly hearing our communities’ needs and our confidence that together, we can make everything okay. Just as truckers rely on each other across the highways, we rely on each other across our communities to get the job done.
There’s an ancient Hebrew concept that has guided communities for centuries: tikkun olam, literally meaning “repairing the world.” This profound idea teaches us that each of us has a responsibility—not just to ourselves or our immediate families, but to the entire world around us. We are called to actively participate in healing what is broken, lifting up what has fallen, and creating justice where there is inequality. But here’s the crucial question: How do we transform this beautiful ideal into tangible action?
🇵🇭 Day 2 from Manila — and today was all about the pipeline.
Three sessions. One clear theme: recruiting young people into Kiwanis is only half the job. Retaining them is where the real work is. 💙
Young members don't leave because they stop caring. They leave because they stop feeling needed. Purpose, belonging, real responsibility, and visible hands-on service — that's what keeps them in the room. 🌱
Today also covered how fundraising through the Kiwanis Children's Fund fuels service globally — and closed with a celebration of Kiwanis's commitment to its Service Leadership Programs.
The question every club needs to ask: if a 20-something walked into your next meeting, would they find what they're looking for?
🇵🇭 Day 1 from Kiwanis International Convention in Manila — and what a way to open a convention.
Good buddies, Thursday morning's keynote, explorer and mountaineer Lei Wang — UNC-Chapel Hill grad making us proud on the world stage 🐏 — brought the room to its feet with wisdom earned at the top of the world. 🏔️
But one line will stay with me long after I leave Manila:
“People quit when the effort stops feeling worth it."
That's not just a mountaineering truth. That's a Kiwanis truth. Our job isn't just to recruit — it's to make sure every member feels the effort is worth it, every single week. 💙
